The Advanced Materials Connectivity Series: Ceramics

‘Ceramic’ originates from the Greek word meaning pottery which is a reference to traditional ceramics derived from naturally occurring raw materials. Modern ceramics, which can include traditional ceramics, are well known for their versatility as well as being technically high-performing or advanced materials with capabilities across multiple applications. Largely, technical ceramics can be a combination of metal compounds containing nitrides, oxides and carbides creating a chemical makeup that has gained a spotlight feature in the manufacturing world for their physical, resistant and thermal properties. Often, Ceramics are used as a replacement for other materials such as metals due to having low density, high compressive strength, hardness, electrical properties and high-temperature availability compared to their counterparts. Notably, they can increase the lifespan of a product and reduce overall maintenance costs.

The current market size is $2.6bn for ceramics manufacturing in the US which is growing year on year with thousands of new jobs created as technical ceramics become integrated as a core material within multiple industries.

The technical ceramics industry is prolific in North America, with some of the biggest ceramics manufacturers in the world having bases here, including Corning Inc, Morgan Advanced Materials, Kyocera, Saint-Cobain, Coorstek Inc and Ceramtec. These organisations and others are leading the way in key developments for the ceramics industry. 2021 has paved the way for innovation and technologies in the ceramics industry, we have seen:

  • Kyocera’s ultra-precise plasma processing technology which is used to manufacture miniature crystal resonators for electronic and medical applications.
  • University of Maryland’s breakthrough method of firing ceramic materials at high speed which could progress the manufacturing of key products in the automotive industry such as solid-state batteries.
  • CeramTec producing piezoceramic disks, a medical device with advanced ultrasonic technology for more potable and smaller application.

The Advanced Materials Show USA is a dedicated show for end users, product developers, OEM’s and the entire material manufacturing supply chain. Those who visit will have a shared focus on seeking the latest materials, innovations and technology and will find new products, suppliers and partners all under one roof. Featured exhibitors include Aspen Technology LLC who develop high-quality ceramic products with hybrid technologies to meet the highest industry standards with capabilities in the USA and Goodfellow a leading global supplier of metals, alloys, ceramics, glasses, polymers, compounds, composites and other materials to meet the research, development and specialist production requirements of science and industry.

Speaking at our industry-leading conference we have Richard Clark, Global Lead – Energy Storage at Morgan Advanced Materials and a world-class conference lineup you are not going to want to miss.
